Boron containing
polymers
Boron clusters (exp. Carboranes)
There are three
main properties for using boron in polymers. One of them is empty p orbital and
the other one is neutron capturing. Thirth property is that it can react with
oxygen at elvated temperature and produce B2O3 char. Eren
research group have two main research fields in boron application. One of the
medicine for its nuclear properties and the other one is composite for its
flame retardant behavior. Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is based on the
nuclear reaction that occurs. When boron-I0 is irradiated with low-energy
thermal neutrons to yield alpha particles. There are two main properties during
the application in cancer treatment. One of the is transfer of B-10 atom to the
selectively to cancer cells. Secondly, a high fluence of neutrons is to be
delivered to the tumor. Boron containing polymers also show flame retardant
properties. So, they can be used in high performance polymers, fibers and
composites
Carboran bearing polymers
The research presented in this
project focuses on the development of novel functional hybrid organic-inorganic
architectures containing chemically-tethered icosohedral carboranes. The
motivation behind this work was to understand and overcome the challenges
associated with the incorporation of inorganic boron clusters into a variety of
well-defined polymeric architectures bearing phosphorus functionality. This
task was critical for the advancement of scientific understanding, as well as
the improvement and implementation of novel hybrid materials towards
technological applications.
Boron nitride based
composites
The present work focuses on the investigation of the thermal and dielectric properties of hexagonal boron nitride (BN) containing ROMP (Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerization) based composites. The effects of BN and its content on the dielectric properties, and thermal resistance of composites, are systematically investigated and discussed. The resultant composites possess the high electrical break over voltages. While all of the ROMP based films exhibit low ε′ value in a wide frequency range, In the case of the composite with 20% BN and poly(bromooxanorbornene-co-cyclooctadiene) displays very low dielectric constants in around 1.5 up to 1 MHz at 20oC. This value is significantly lower than that of common polymer dielectrics. Considering this extremely low ε′ and small Tan δ values of composites, it can be said that ROMP homopolymer and ROMP-BN composite films highly satisfy these requirements at a wide range of frequency and temperature.
